SPRING CIVIC ENGAGEMENT DATES
***If you are registering more than one child for the same activity, you will need to use a different email for each child. The system unfortunately will not allow you to use the same email more than once in one activity.
Registration Fees: In order to maintain our high quality programming, the GJHP charges a NON-REFUNDABLE $10 fee* to participate in our civic engagement outings. This fee is due at the time of registration by paying with a credit or debit card. Registration is incomplete without payment. Once charged, these fees are nonrefundable, even in the event your child cancels their participation in the activity.

Bernie’s Book Bank – 4:00pm-5:30pm
Located in Lake Forest, Bernie’s Book Bank collects new and gently used children’s books and redistributes them to at-risk children throughout the Chicagoland area. You child will sort, stickers and bag books for redistribution.
Students will meet in the Oasis immediately after school for a light snack and we will leave for Bernie’s Book Bank at 3:35pm. We will volunteer from 4:00pm-5:30pm. A parent chaperone or GJHP staff member will drop your child off at home around 6:00pm.
UPTOWN Café – 5:30pm-7:30pm
Volunteering at the Uptown Cafe is an incredible experience for our 6th-8th grade Central School students, offering them a unique opportunity to provide dignity, hope and sustenance to those in need. Located on the North Side of Chicago, the Uptown Cafe is a restaurant style anti-hunger program, where once a month our students serve the Cafe patrons a sit-down hot meal, and also share their company and time with people in need.
CJE – 4:00pm-5:00pm
All 5th-8th grade Glencoe students have an amazing opportunity to volunteer at CJE SeniorLife and connect with residents in the Alzheimer’s and Dementia Unit. Students arrive with fantastic energy and enthusiasm, bringing joy to the residents living there!
Students will meet in the Oasis immediately after school for a light snack. We will leave for CJE SeniorLife at 3:35pm. We will volunteer from 4:00pm-5:00pm. A parent chaperone or GJHP staff member will drop your child off at home around 5:30pm.
A JUST HARVEST – 4:15pm-7:15pm
About once a month 6th-8th grade Central School students have a wonderful opportunity to volunteer at A Just Harvest, a soup kitchen located in the Rogers Park community. They will be assisting with setup, cleanup, and serving nutritious meals to people and families in need.
A Just Harvest is unique because they are the largest and only self-standing community soup kitchen in the Chicago Metro area and they serve hot meals 365 days a year to anyone in need. No one is turned away. This provides Glencoe students with more than just a chance to help provide nourishment for people, but a chance to welcome everyone no matter the race, culture or socioeconomic background.
Students will meet in the Oasis immediately after school for a light snack. We leave for A Just Harvest around 3:45pm, depending on traffic. We will finish serving dinner and cleaning up around 7:00pm. A parent chaperone or GJHP staff member will drop your child off at home around 7:30pm.
Cradles to Crayons – 4:15pm-6:15pm
A new volunteer opportunity for the GJHP this year, the C2C Giving Factory provides children from birth to age 12, living in low-income and homeless situations, with the essential items they need to thrive at home, school and play. The Factory supplies these items free of charge by collecting new and nearly new children’s items through community drives. Donations are then processed and packages by volunteers. We will be traveling to the Giving Factory in Chicago to process, sort and package items for donation. Variety Show Info
The GJHP Variety Show is a loosely scripted performance opportunity for students Grade 5th-8th. While it features the various talents of the participants…it is not a “Talent Show”.
Each performer will be in an Opening and Closing number as well as be placed in at least one featured ‘scene’–as actor, and singer. Some actors may be used in supporting ‘roles’ in additional scenes.
This year’s Show: “A Broadway Odd-essey IV…in 3-D” is a follow up to last years successful production. It will take a look at several popular Broadway Musicals…in a fun and new way. For example…what would happen if “Grease” was turned into a musical about the country “Greece!”
There are NO auditions required–or previous performance experience. All are welcome to join the fun.
