CURRENT ENGAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES
PAST CIVIC ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITES
During the 2019-2020 school year, the GJHP Civic Engagement Program focused on a different social issue each month.
SEPTEMBER: LITERACY MONTH
In recognition of “literacy month,” GJHP partners with Bernie’s Book Bank, where students sort, sticker, label and collect books for communities in need. GJHP also coordinates Book Buddies, a program where 5th-8th graders are paired with K-2nd graders and meet weekly to read together at the Glencoe Public Library. *Book Buddies is also offered in the Spring.
OCTOBER: ANIMAL WELFARE MONTH
GJHP recognizes the 70 million stray animals in the U.S. creating dog toys in the Oasis and sponsoring a schoolwide donation drive. Additionally, Glencoe middle school students learn about abandoned animals and visit PAWS and Orphans of the Storm.
NOVEMBER: CHILDREN'S HEALTH
Partnering with organizations that address children’s health, GJHP organizes events for Glencoe middle school students to write cards, create no-sew blankets and make craft kits, which are distributed to children enduring long hospital stays.
DECEMBER: FOOD INSECURITY MONTH
GJHP volunteers with Feed My Starving Children and Connections for the Homeless to pack meals for individuals in need, as well a prepare and serve dinner at A Just Harvest Community Kitchen.
JANUARY: DISASTER RELIEF
Glencoe students focus on domestic disaster relief. To build awareness of community needs resulting from natural or human-constructed disaster, Glencoe students work on projects with the Red Cross.
GJHP recognizes more than 550,000 individuals affected by homelessness in the United States, (80,000 of which live in the Chicagoland Area) by making and distributing kits filled with gloves, socks, snacks and other necessities. Students also make sleeping mats and pack lunches for Connections for the Homeless.
MARCH: MENTAL HEALTH
GJHP focuses on mental health and combatting stress. To bring awareness to this topic, students participate in art therapy activities in the Oasis, attend a night of self-care and interact with social support animals.
APRIL: CONSERVING OUR ENVIRONMENT
GJHP commemorates Earth Day by focusing on initiatives to care for our world. Students attend a community clean up, work in the Central School garden and take a trip to the Glencoe Community Garden. This year students will also participate in an “Eco-brick” recycling project.
MAY: APPRECIATING SENIORS
GJHP partners with Family Service of Glencoe to participate in a legacy project. Students visit local senior centers, to deliver musical performances and socialize.
